Katie Cooper
July-August 2022Katie Cooper is a painter and installation artist based in Arizona by way of New York – where she earned her MFA at the School of Visual Arts a long time ago – and Colorado, where she misspent her youth. She has shown nationwide, done school and community residencies, and in 2020 was awarded a Research and Development Grant by the Arizona Commission on the Arts and a Pivot Grant by the Arts Foundation of Tucson and Southern Arizona. Cooper has worked and traveled outside for much of the past decade: at stables and ranches, on a solo mule ride across seven states, retracing that ride in an art-studio van, camping and walking back roads along the way. This lifestyle informs her current body of work, installations and paintings on handmade recycled paper that explore composition while referring to movement, time, space, and the intersection of seen and unseen worlds. She maintains a studio and an old red mule by a dry riverbed in Tucson.
